The STELLAR Vision
Children Who Love Reading and Have a Strong Foundation in the English Language

English is taught through stories and texts that appeal to children, with explicit grammar instruction. Students are provided with opportunities to express themselves in an environment where language learning can be enjoyable yet purposeful. Through the reading of engaging stories in class, students get to speak extensively, discussing and sharing their views with the teacher and their peers. The main purpose is to build students’ confidence in speech and writing, and enhance their learning of the language.

Lower Primary STELLAR Strategies

The STELLAR pedagogic model for lower primary is made up of three major teaching strategies:

  • Shared Book Approach (SBA)
  • Modified Language Experience Approach (MLEA)
  • Learning Centres (LC)

Upper Primary STELLAR Strategies

The STELLAR pedagogic model for upper primary is made up of five major teaching strategies:

  • Supported Reading (SR)
  • Know-Want to Know-Learnt (KWL)
  • Retelling (RT)
  • Writing Process Cycle (WPC)
  • Differentiated Instruction (DI)

Programmes

Read@ZPS Programme

The objectives for the Read@ZPS Programme are to:

  • To promote a whole school reading culture
  • To strengthen English Language skills among students through reading

The  school adopts a two-pronged approach to meet the diverse reading needs of our students:

  • Collaborate with Bukit Merah Public Library in Read@School, a structured and in-depth reading programme which adopts a holistic approach to reading. READ@School customises a set of structured reading programmes that aims to help students pursue reading as an enjoyable activity. Some of the reading activities include Books 2 Go (mass borrowing of books from Bukit Merah Public Library), Book Buzz and Storytelling (assembly programmes), Dare to Read (reading activity in which students embark on a quest to complete story-based missions)
  • School-based reading programme in which students are exposed to a range of literary and informational texts through their participation in whole school reading initiatives.
  • DEAR is classroom time set aside for teachers and students to Drop Everything and Read. The goal of DEAR is to encourage independent silent reading for extended periods of time on a weekly basis. Students choose the book they wish to read based on interest and ability.
  • The iRead programme provides age-appropriate books for the class library so that the students have access to a learning environment conducive for reading and surrounded by books.
  • Supplementary reading materials are subscribed by students to encourage them to read content beyond the textbooks. These materials are used by teachers to complement the EL curriculum. Some of the publications that our students read include Ranger Rick Junior, Storybox, Adventurebox, Discovery Box, Little Red Dot, Inspire and Reader’s Digest.

Learning Support Programme (LSP)

The LSP is a specialised early intervention programme aimed at providing learning support to pupils who enter Primary 1 with weak English language and literacy skills. Pupils are identified for LSP through a systematic screening process carried out at the beginning of Primary 1. The objective of the LSP is to equip pupils with basic literacy skills so that they could access learning in the regular classroom.

The LSP is implemented by qualified teachers appointed by their schools to be Learning Support Coordinators (LSCs). LSCs are given additional training by MOE HQ that equips them with specialised knowledge and skills to implement the programme. Pupils are supported daily for half an hour a day in groups of 8 to 10 pupils. Support continues in Primary 2 for pupils who need it.

School-based Dyslexia Remediation Programme (SDR)

The SDR programme is a two-year intervention for Primary Three and Four students who are identified through a systematic screening process for dyslexia conducted at the end of Primary Two. The programme is conducted in small groups by trained school personnel using a remediation curriculum designed by MOE Reading Specialists. The curriculum has been designed taking into consideration the students’ learning profile and the contents of the mainstream English language curriculum. The school personnel conducting the programme also worked with the subject teachers and parents to closely monitor the students’ attendance and learning progress.

English Language Week

The English Language Week is an annual event organised to promote the effective use of the English Language and the love for reading.
